JRD Testing In Standard Poodles:
Submitted by Mr. Mike Wahlig
There is currently a lot of attention being given to the recent announcement of a genetic test for JRD in Standard Poodles by DOGenes, a Canadian company. Clinics are being planned for this test at several locations. A genetic test for JRD in Standard Poodles is certainly something that Standard Poodle breeders seek.
However, given the newness of the DOGenes JRD test, it is reasonable to be cautious and wait with your JRD testing until the research behind the test has been published in a peer reviewed veterinary journal.
Since this test is so new, a couple of pieces of information are important for breeders who are considering having this test performed on their dogs.
The first key comment comes from the Broad Institute at MIT. This is one of the preeminent research institutions working on genetic issues in dogs.
The Broad Institute website www.dogdna.org has posted a specific comment about the DOGenes JRD test results in Lhasa Apsos. The Broad institute is pursuing the genetic basis of JRD in Boxers. The comment on the Broad Institute's website is as follows:
"The company DOGenes recently began offering a test for a change (mutation) in the DNA sequence of a gene involved in kidney development. In Lhasa Apsos, 90% test positive for this mutation. Just 5 out of every 100 dogs with a positive test will have an abnormal kidney biopsy and just 2 out of every 100 dogs will develop JRD.”
DOGenes has only tested one Boxer for this mutation. We do not know how many healthy Boxers also have the mutation or how many JRD Boxers do not have the mutation. While this mutation may increase the risk of JRD, it is also possible that in Boxers it has little or no effect on health.
The Broad Institute's JRD research project (Suki's Study) suggests multiple genes may be involved in Boxer JRD. We need more Boxers to participate to confirm this and find the mutations responsible. If you have a healthy Boxer older than 5 or a Boxer with JRD, please send us a DNA sample

The second piece of information is that OFA will not accept JRD testing results and will not create a database for the DOGenes JRD genetic test at this time.
OFA's comment is that "We are waiting for publication of the research in a peer reviewed veterinary journal before accepting these results into our registry."
UCDavis study:
A Request for Blood Samples from Dogs Affected by Chronic Active Hepatitis
Chronic Active Hepatis & Canine Dwarfism
UCDavis study still going on! UCDavis is still looking for samples from affected Poodles with Chronic Active Hepatits . Please contact Dr Mark Neff at: mwneff@ucdavis.edu
He is trying to collect as many affecteds as he can for this study to find out the mode of inheritance in this disease.
Please if you have a Poodle with CAH or know of anyone with a Poodle with CAH, please have them contact him.
Also Dr. Mark Neff is studying the mode of inheritance for dwarfism in Poodles, especially in miniatures. He is trying to get DNA samples from the affected dwarfs as well as the parents. Please if you can help with this please contact him immediately.
This is all confidential and you will deal directly with UCDavis. Please help us try to find the answers we need to stop these problems.
Parade of Champions
"The Board of Governors of PCA values the multi-faceted abilities of our wonderful breed. We have supported and worked to make the performance dogs an important part of PCA. As evidenced by the number of entries at this year's events, performance events are a key part of the excitement that is the PCA National Specialty Show. After considering a number of factors, the Board has decided to hold separate parades for conformation, obedience, agility and hunting titled dogs in conjunction with each event. By holding separate events, the dogs that are qualified for each event will be able to enter that event and be recognized on the day of the event, more participants who do not plan to stay for the conformation show will be able to participate in or observe the parade on the day of their event and the size of each parade will be more manageable. Certainly, dogs that are qualified for more than one parade can participate in all parades for which they qualify." [Parti-colored Poodles will be allowed to participate in the parades for the events in which they earned their title.]
News From NIH
Exciting news that NIH is going to go forward with the research project on digital SCC research. They are already coming to PCA on Monday and tuesday to collect blood samples for their morphology study and they will also collect samples from black Standards for the SCC study. Would you please post the attached NIH letter in an appropriately prominent place on the Web site so that people will be aware that it is going to be at PCA. They are also going to have kits for people to take. Thanks to you, Purina and Lynn Wilkes this project will be on a fast track at NIH with little or no cost to PCAF. After it is posted Lynn Wilkes will make sure it will get on the various Chat room sites.
