Poodle Club of America Nomination of Luann Wilkinson for the 2024 AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award
Forever enamored with purebred animals, Luann Wilkinson was an avid owner of Arabian horses during the 1970s and 1980s. She also possessed a diverse array of dogs, ranging from Poodles to Irish Wolfhounds, showcasing her genuine passion for these breeds. In her family, she is known as an “animal whisperer”. Luann still holds a special connection with animals.
Luann embodies the American Kennel Club Code of Sportsmanship as a breeder, owner, and handler. She started showing a Weimaraner who was allergic to grass and wore socks. This dog was also owned by Fred, her husband and the love of her life.
However, her true passion was poodles. Luann has had Poodles since she was 16 years old, and to this day still has Standard Poodles. Early on in her dog career, she worked and taught obedience classes for over 12 years. She also showed in Conformation and traveled throughout the Southwest presenting her poodles. She has bred and owned Standard Poodles with Alan and Janet Kingsley, Kathy Adams and Betty Brown.
Luann remains an active member of the Lone Star Poodle Club and Texas Kennel Club. She holds a variety of positions in the two clubs, Secretary, Treasurer, Director, and President.
For over 30 years she has participated and assisted with the Poodle Club of America National Shows. She is a very knowledgeable and respected member of PCA. She greets everyone with a friendly smile and works to make our National Show a memorable experience for all attendees. For many years, she also assisted the Kingsleys with catalog sales. Currently, she is a highly valued member of the PCA lunch/banquet committee. She organizes the sale and distribution of the tickets for the lunches and annual dinner. She is, and always has been, a lady in all of her endeavors.
The PCA Board of Governors voted that Luann Wilkinson receive the 2024 AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
